Best Ed Tech Sites for Kids!

I'm sure we could all name at least 5 websites that are great for kids! They are educational, safe, and fun. While we all have our favorites, it's sometimes hard to "weed through" all of the many sites out there to figure out which ones are truly "good" for kids.

Below I am including links to many lists of both the best and favorite Ed Tech sites for kids. Feel free to also share your own!

Thanks and Enjoy!

Online Halloween FUN!

When I taught Elementary Computers, I always tried to allow my students some fun times in the lab around each holiday. I also gave them options so that if they did not celebrate certain holidays, then they could still have fun with their classmates! They loved it!

There are so many fun games online for Halloween that are appropriate for kids and students of all ages. I am including links to many below! If you know of others, feel free to share those as well! Enjoy!

Starting the Year in the Elementary Computer Lab

Besides the obvious tasks of going over procedures, rules, and expectations for the computer lab, I would always do some of these other basic tasks and activities with the students as well at the beginning of each new school year.

I hope these ideas and sites are helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me and ask questions for any other Ed Tech ideas. I'm happy to help!

Grades K-1

Many of these students may have never used a computer before. Thus, they need to learn the basic skills of using a keyboard and a mouse properly. I have many links on my Live Binder site via the Purple tabs. However, here are a few sites that I love to begin with for this age group:

Grades 2-5

These students may need to review skills such as using a keyboard/mouse, navigating the Internet, and/or basic typing skills. The Purple and Brown tabs via my Live Binder site have many great sites for helping students review and showcase basic computer skills. Here are a few of my favorites:

Learn & Search

With today's vast resources online, it's become easier for teachers and educators to learn about the latest in education. Teachers learn best from each other and we always seem so willing to share our resources and expertise with one another.

With that said, I am including links below to sites that will allow educators to search for great PD resources or education technology tools and resources. If you know of any others, please feel free to share.

Thanks!

KC Tech Net Conference: Part 2

So, now on to Part 2 of the list of new sites I learned about via the KC Tech Net conference back in February. Below I am including many multimedia and student resource tools. So far, the only site that I've actually been able to use with my students, is Wonderopolis. I used it today with 2nd grade and they loved it! Please check out that site if you are unfamiliar with it. It's great! I will post more soon about how I used it with my students.

In case you missed it, you can click HERE for Part 1 of the KC Tech Net links.

For now, please enjoy these 6 sites below. If you have used any of these before, I'd love to hear your feedback and ideas!

Happy April, everyone!

Science + Social Studies = Tons of Fun!

With the focus in today's society being placed heavily on Math and Reading, sometimes it's hard to fit in all that is needed for Science & Social Studies. I personally am a fan of both subjects. When I taught in a 5th grade classroom the Solar System and Weather units were my favorite in science. I enjoyed pretty much all of the Social Studies because it was American History, which I love!

To help teach or reinforce skills in both Science and Social Studies, I am including many links below. I hope they will be of use to those who need them. You may also check out my Live Binder site for even more links to various subjects.

Student Tools for Learning

There are so many amazing Online Tools for students to use nowadays, that it truly makes me jealous that these were not around when I was in school. However, it also excites me for my own students and my own kids to be able to have these available when they are needed.

Of course, there are tools available for every age, grade, and subject imaginable. I know one tool I love to use with my younger Elementary students is Kerpoof. We have used this for so many assignments, merely because it allows me to check their learning on various technology topics, without the need for them to be able to write or spell. Plus, they love being able to draw or color online!

Below I am including some links and lists for close to 100 more amazing online tools for students to use. I hope that they are helpful! Feel free to share below in the comments how you have used or hope to use some of these tools. I'd love to hear your ideas!

Thanks everyone!

Thankful for Networking!

Today I am including links to some of my favorite Blogger and Pinners (in no particular order)! There is not a big enough Blog Post in this world available for me to be able to include all of the amazing fellow educators, bloggers, pinners, moms, etc. However, I decided to include the ones that I feel always have great ideas, share often, and are just naturally creative! Again, there are soooo many not included in this list that totally should be!

Thank you to EVERYONE who networks via Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. I enjoy and appreciate each and every one of you!

I may not get to another post for a few days, so just in case, have an AMAZING Thanksgiving everyone! Enjoy your day and count your blessings!

Super Speedy Typers

Even though I have my 2nd graders engage in keyboarding and typing lessons, it's really only to get them introduced to the concept of typing correctly, as well as to get them to learn the layout of the computer keyboard. The site that the students and I love the best is Dance Mat Typing.

However, with my 3rd and 4th graders (I don't have 5th grade this year), we really start to focus on typing speed and accuracy. I understand their little fingers are still growing and that they are still learning. However, if I give them goals and incentives to type correctly, I am finding that they work harder to truly learn where those letters are on the keyboard. We also discuss the importance of learning to type correctly.

Every quarter, I am giving these students the same typing test. Their goal: to improve their WPM (Words per Minute) by at least 1 each quarter. This way I know they are truly focused on learning these typing skills and they feel pride when they see they can beat their own scores. I am happy to report that out of approx. 150 3rd/4th grade students not ONE student's score went down from 1st Quarter to 2nd!! I did have a few that did not increase their score at all, but no one's went down! YAY!

I also made a deal with the students. Since Quarter 1's score is just a baseline to see where they were on their WPM at the beginning of the year, the goal is for them to improve at least 2 of the 3 remaining quarters of the year. While their quarterly goal is to improve by 1 each quarter (for grading purposes), I want them to also have a bigger goal to reach for.

I told students that for those who do meet this bigger goal over the course of the school year, they will receive a special reward in May. My thoughts is that it will most likely be a popcorn party, extra computer lab time, or even a special treasure box item. We'll see what happens.

With my younger students, we have just been focusing on learning the alphabet and finding the letters on the keyboard. This is a bit easier for 1st graders than it is for kindergartners, but I'm already seeing the improvements. Here are a couple of sites I've used to help them practice these skills:

I've created a display in my computer lab for my 3rd graders (my 4th graders are in the building next door). This way they can see their own progress and focus on trying to reach even higher WPM's. I will update this after every quarterly test.

There are lots of other fun Typing sites listed on my Live Binder site.

If you have any other fun sites or tips for Keyboarding, feel free to share them below or on my Facebook page.

Thanks!

My First PD Presentation

On October 26th, I was honored (and nervous) to give a Professional Development presentation for the first time ever in my career! I have never liked public speaking, but I am definitely okay speaking in front of kids.

Me: Presenting in front of my colleagues, 10.26.12

I was asked by an administrator to present a session on Educational Technology. I chose to title my session, "Free Tech Tools & Tips for the Classroom". I was speaking to a group of K-8 teachers and administrators.
All of my teaching experience is at the elementary level, so I had to make sure I incorporated tools and tips that the secondary teachers could use as well.
I will be presenting a follow up session in January, so I plan to find even more tools that can be integrated across all subjects, grades K-8. If you have any ideas, feel free to share your favorites here!

Below I am including a few links from my presentation, as well as a Rafflecopter link! Please enter to win a copy of my presentation!

Thanks everyone!

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!!!

I hope everyone had a fabulous Halloween!

Now that it's November, it's time to shift the focus to Thanksgiving.
I am hoping to be able to incorporate Thanksgiving activities in my computer lab sometime this  month.

I am including links below to many great resources, activities, and links. There is even a Cyber Scavenger Hunt that I am hoping to try out with my older students.

If you know of any other interactive Thanksgiving links, please feel free to post them in the comments section below!

Thanks & Enjoy!

Love Live Binders!

I love Live Binders! I think it is very user friendly and easy to organize. That's why I have so many binders now (see tab for the page with all of my Live Binders at the top of this blog). My students use my Computer Lab Bookmarks binder daily in my computer lab. They love it!

What I really like about the site, too, is seeing all of the other binders with fantastic resources! Live Binders can be created for any subject, but the majority of the ones on the site are education related. I am including the links to a few of the FANTASTIC binders below! I hope you enjoy them!

Also, be on the lookout soon for a blog post about how my first ever Ed Tech PD Presentation went last week! :-)

God Bless Kindergarten Teachers!

This year, I am teaching K-4 Computers. Last year, I taught grades K-5. Either way, Kindergartners wear me out sometimes!

I have nothing against those little cuties. They are eager to learn and absolutely LOVE playing on the computer! I honestly do not know how Kindergarten teachers keep up with them all day! God Bless them! I only have them once a week for 45 min. and they often can wear me out.

I get a mixed bag when Kindergartners come into my lab for the first time. Some know what a computer is and how to work it, most likely because they've used one somewhere before. Others barely know what a computer is.

This year it seems I have even more students who don't understand the correlation between how moving the mouse also moves the pointer on the screen. Then there's the whole issue of making sure they know left from right so that they will click the correct mouse button.

This year, I got smarter! I took a silver Sharpie marker, and I drew a Star on the left mouse button for every single computer. It's helping so much! I've also seen a small sticker placed on that button before, and that seems to help, too.

We really work hard at just the basics of learning how to use the mouse and how to navigate the Internet. It sometimes takes a few weeks, but they usually do learn quickly.

I am including some great online activities for Kindergarten. Of course, many of these can be used at other grades, too. I hope these are useful. Enjoy!!

Great Bookmarking Tools

We all know that Pinterest is an AMAZING resource for educators. I know it definitely "sucks me in"!

However, there are so many more bookmarking tools out that are also very helpful for Educators!

My favorite one to use is Live Binders. I have created at least 4 of these binders so far (see my page on this blog). Their site is very user friendly and easy to organize. My students also find it easy to use. Not to mention, you also have the ability to find so many other amazing binders on their site as well.

Previously, I used iKeepBookmarks. While this site is also fairly easy to use and organize, I stopped using it because it seemed as if the site either crashed too often or would "freeze up" as I was editing. However, for the most part, it is still a very good bookmarking tool.

Below I am including a few more handing Bookmarking tools. If you have any others that you have used and also prefer, please let me know! Enjoy!
