Digital Citizenship

"Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately."

This a VERY important topic to instill in children in today's society. It's important that they are aware of the proper ways to interact online. When I taught elementary computers, we would revisit this and Internet Safety a few times a year. I always told my students that just because you're "hiding" behind a computer screen doesn't mean that the rules of safety, courtesy, and anti-bullying don't apply.

I am including the links below to many resources to help teach this concept to students. It's never too early to teach them how to be safe online.

Thank You, Veterans!

One day a year just does not seem enough to thank military veterans and personnel! We are all forever grateful to your services. Thank you for all that you do!

I would like to give an extra thanks to my brother, Ben, who serves in the U.S. Navy. Thanks Bro! :-)

Below I am including some last minutes Veterans Day resources and freebies to use in the classroom. Feel free to share these with others and/or comment with links to other resources as well.

Thanks again, Veterans!! God Bless you all!

Don't Be A Bully!

I hate bullying! I hate all kinds of bullying! I do not like the fact that this issue is increasingly becoming more and more of a serious problem in our society. I worry for my own kids as well as all kids that I know and love.

Bullying is mean, hurtful, dangerous, unnecessary, demeaning, cowardly, and just plain DUMB! I have already begun to instill into my own kids that bullying will not be tolerated. Whether they are bullied themselves or they become a bully, I will not tolerate it!

Bullying has had some serious repercussions in recent times. Some kids even go as far as taking their own lives because of being bullied so severely. It's time to make this epidemic STOP!

It's gone too far and we all need to work together to educate everyone about why bullying is not okay, how to stop it, what to do if it happens, and how to recover from it.

Just because bullying is mostly seen in a school setting, does not mean that it does not exist in the adult world as well.

ALL BULLYING is NEVER OKAY! Let's take a stand.

Below are many resources for educating people of all ages on this disturbing trend.

9/11/01: We Will Never Forget...

It's hard to believe that tomorrow will mark 12 years since that most fateful day in America. It truly feels like it was yesterday, as I can remember every detail of that day. Though I did not personally lose anyone in that tragedy, it was still a heartbreaking event.

God Bless America and all of those who were affected!

For many of us, we either have young children and/or work with young children daily. These children may not realize the impact that fateful day had on our country. It's important to let them know about the day in the most calm manner that we can. The idea is to inform them of the history, not scare them. Some of the videos and images they may see on TV tomorrow could seem scary. However, if they know the background behind those images, hopefully we can help to reduce the scariness of the situation.

Whether discussing this in the classroom or at home, I am including many resources to help students and children understand and remember 9/11/01.

We Will Never Forget!!

KC Tech Net Conference: Part 2

So, now on to Part 2 of the list of new sites I learned about via the KC Tech Net conference back in February. Below I am including many multimedia and student resource tools. So far, the only site that I've actually been able to use with my students, is Wonderopolis. I used it today with 2nd grade and they loved it! Please check out that site if you are unfamiliar with it. It's great! I will post more soon about how I used it with my students.

In case you missed it, you can click HERE for Part 1 of the KC Tech Net links.

For now, please enjoy these 6 sites below. If you have used any of these before, I'd love to hear your feedback and ideas!

Happy April, everyone!

Standardized Testing: Pros & Cons?

This is a topic that I have very strong opinions about, mostly due to personal experiences as a teacher. I am not against all testing, per say, but I do think that schools and districts need to limit the amount of testing they are subjecting today's students to.

This is my 8th year of teaching at the elementary level. Over the years, I've seen my fair share of standardized tests in the classroom. I've had to administer the yearly state tests on many occasions. I've also had to administer other fairly lengthy tests that either a district or school required on a regular basis.

I understand that data from testing can be very useful to both a school and parents. I understand that if used correctly, it can help to address the areas of needs that a particular student may have. I am okay with that, and in fact, I encourage testing data to be used in that way.

What I am not okay with, is subjecting students as young as age 6 to repeated, regular, lengthy, standardized tests!! I have seen way too much of that, heard about it and read about, and I have noticed so many negatives from my observations and readings. Some students have stopped trying on these tests. They have been tested so much, that they are no longer putting forth the efforts that they are capable of. Thus, the data is completely skewed now. Some students will rush through all testing that is required while others drag it out because they simply do not want to do it. This is happening at all grade levels. It is happening around the country.

If a school wants to require these types of lengthy standardized tests so often, they need to teach their teachers how to read and use the data. Many teachers do not understand the whys behind these tests, nor how to use the data appropriately. Thus, they are also not able to explain it to parents accurately. It's really an unfair situation to all involved.

Lastly, it angers me to see how many districts and states are even considering using testing data to determine teacher effectiveness. Testing scores should NEVER be tied into teacher evaluations. Period. We cannot control how students will do on one particular testing day, nor can one test truly show that a student does in fact know subject matter.

Students can be evaluated in so many ways. Having more than one GIANT, important standardized test per year, really doesn't seem that necessary. I remember as a kid that we only had maybe a few days of testing per school year. This year, I test more than I teach. It's a very sad reality and I worry for my own children someday. Students are tested so much throughout the year, I really do worry about how they will do on the test that really matters come springtime.

If we are to compete globally in the education sector, things need to change and they need to change NOW! Testing has to be one area that needs to be part of this change.

Below I am including many links. Some show the Pros of standardized testing, while others show Cons. No matter what side you agree with, one thing is for certain: Education needs to benefit the student and prepare them for the real world! Teaching them how to fill in circles, click on an answer, or just merely answer questions over and over is not teaching them valuable life skills or subject matter.

Thanks for listening! Please feel free to add your comments as well. Have a great day!

Happy Birthday, Johnny Appleseed!

Apples are such a great topic for Fall! It's only fitting that Johnny Appleseed himself happens to have a birthday during Fall.

Apples are loved by many and the story of Johnny Appleseed is one that most children enjoy. This tall tale was always one that I also enjoyed as a child.

I hope that you will share this tale and more with your students and children. Below, I am including many links to help teach about both apples and Johnny Appleseed.

I may not be able to teach much about this great topic in the computer lab, but I do plan to mention it to my own children at home.

Enjoy an apple today in honor of Johnny!
